Local Students Are Growing Up Green at the First Annual “Green and Growing” School Day Event
Students, grades 3-12, are headed outside for a breath of fresh air at the first annual “Green and Growing” school day event, May 2. “Green and Growing,” presented by the Great Green America Fest, is a cross curriculum field trip where students can experience a full day of interactive, fun eco-education that is a refreshing reinforcement to textbooks. Designed to meet the PA Department of Academic Standards, “Green and Growing” transforms a festival site into a 30-acre classroom filled with programs presented by dedicated green partners. The Franklin Institute Science Museum will focus on Global Warming and the weather while Whitaker On Wheels focuses on green energy with their “Electricganza” program. The North Museum of Natural History and Science will talk about endangered ocean animals. Philadelphia Zoo will present their Remarkable Rainforest display and Zoo America Wildlife Park will showcase native PA species of animals. York College of Pennsylvania will involve students in making Treasures from Trash, all recyclable materials. Theater of the Seventh Sister, Lancaster, was commissioned to write two original, interactive plays focusing on litter and potential environmental concern. The Department for Conservation and Natural Resources, Waste Management, Pennsylvania Academy of Science, Ducks Unlimited and more all will present interactive green activities and exhibits throughout the day. “Green and Growing” is an all-day educational event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. so come early and stay late in order to experience all of the exciting activities. The eco-edutainment continues Saturday and Sunday, May 3 and 4, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the Great Green America Fest. Visitors of all ages get green and get groovy at this family-oriented, fun-filled eco-folk fest filled with timely and relevant workshops, displays, speakers and films while enjoying live, musical entertainment from top Folk, Roots and Americana performers. Saturday and Sunday adult admission is $15.95 per day at the gate and up to four children under the age of 11 admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Green Fest details, contest registration forms, featured speakers and programmers, performer biographies and special discount ticket offers can be found at www.GreatGreenAmericaFest.com or by calling (717) 665-7021. The Great Green America Fest is located on the grounds of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire on Route 72, a half mile south of PA Turnpike Exit 266, 14 miles east of Hershey and 15 miles north of Lancaster. # # # |
